Tooth Wear
Some tooth wear during life is inevitable. But when this wear results in an unsatisfactory appearance, sensitivity or mechanical problems, this condition needs investigation of the cause and treatment.
There are different types of wear:
Abrasion: this is physical wear often due to over zealous toothbrushing. This classically leaves notches on the tooth surfaces close to the gum.
Attrition: this is physical wear caused by one tooth moving against another. This is usually found in patients with an abrasive diet missing teeth resulting in inadequate bite, and bruxism.
Erosion: this is usually chemical wear of the teeth. This can be exacerbated if there is reduced salivary flow (dry mouth).
